Cognitive flexibility

Training your brain is like training any other muscle. You must practice, be patient and be consistent.

Cognitive Flexibility is crucial for stress management.

It is not just about being able to reason better or to switch more easily between tasks.

It is first and foremost about being able to recognise our mental models and thought patterns, and to switch between them.

It is probably the most important cognitive muscle that you can train. But is it not easy. It means being willing to confront beliefs, thoughts and behaviours that are deeply connected our identity and sense of self.

So why would anyone want to do this?

Because it leads to better decision making (more data), a better understanding of other’s perspectives (more empathy and connection) and an overall stronger ability to adjust when plans change (reframe and re-appraise).

In short, because it leads to resilience.
